Field Hockey ranked No. 17

Temple has fallen three spots back in the national rankings, but remains in the top 20 for the third week in a row.

This week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll puts the Owls in the No. 17 spot. Temple was ranked No. 11 and No. 14 in the two weeks prior.

The Owls had a big weekend, with a 4-1 win against conference rival Villanova and 3-2 double overtime win against Longwood. They have won three straight since losing 2-0 to Delaware on Sept. 13.

At 6-2, Temple is off to its best start since 1991.

Owls ends weekend with home game against Longwood

Temple returns home to Geasey Field to face Longwood, fresh off of beating Villanova 4-1 in its first Big East conference game.

Longwood is 3-4, but won its last two games via an 8-1 blowout of Appalachian State and a 3-2 win over Radford.

Senior midfielder Stacey de Grandhomme, out of Cape Town, South Africa, leads Longwood in scoring with six goals and an assist for 13 points. She had a five-point performance against Appalachian State that was made up of two goals and an assist.

Prior to Friday night’s win over Villanova, the Owls shutout Monmouth 6-0 last Saturday.

Temple’s offense has been generating a lot more scoring opportunities in the past two games, after being outshot by its opponents in four of its first five games.

The Owls have also been playing well on the defensive end with just one goal allowed in the last two games.

Temple beat Longwood 5-3 on the road last season and is 3-0 all-time against the Virginia-based school.

Ice hockey opens season against Rival

The ice hockey team will face off at Mid-Atlantic Collegiate
Hockey rival Maryland tomorrow to start off their 2013-14 campaign.
The puck drops at 2:40 p.m..

Maryland knocked the Owls out of playoff contention last year, and
finished one place ahead of Temple to take the final playoff spot in
the MACH standings, ultimately leading to a run into nationals for the
Terrapins from Maryland.

“We want to get back at them for taking our spot in regionals,” senior
goaltender Chris Mullen said. “And they ultimately got to nationals,
which is our goal. They’re definitely a good team but there’s no
reason why we can’t skate with them.”

Sophomore forward Greg Malinowski didn’t hold back.

“I hate them,” Malinowski said. “They’re not really a skilled team,
they’re just a real chippy team.”

Saturday’s game will also mark the beginning of the Ryan Frain era as
head coach of Temple Ice Hockey. Frain previously served as an
assistant under former head coach Jerry Roberts, and is looking forward
to the opportunity to be head coach.

“Just a lot of excitement [heading into the season],” Frain said.
“Being assistant coach for the last few years I think I’ve gotten the
feel for what it’s going to take to be head coach. It’s really
exciting to have the opportunity to be the head coach, it’s going to
be pretty awesome to be a head coach at the age I am.”

What better way would there be to start a coaching career with a win
over a MACH rival?

Big East play begins for Owls

The time for Big East play is finally here.

Temple will take on Villanova Friday night in its first conference game of the year and its first ever in the Big East.

The Owls have enjoyed a good 2013 campaign so far, with a 4-2 record and the nation’s No. 14 ranking.

With a 2-4 record, Villanova has struggled to find its footing this season. They beat St. Louis 4-2, but closed out last weekend with a 4-1 loss to Kent State.

Temple was shutout 2-0 on the road by Delaware last Friday, but bounced back with a dominating 6-0 win against Monmouth at home the next day.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper and co-captain Lizzy Millen has done a great job protecting the cage this season, with the second best save percentage in the nation at .828.

The defense in front of her has played well too, helping to hold opponents to an average of 1.67 goals per game.

Junior forward Amber Youtz is coming off a four-goal and 10-point performance against Monmouth last weekend and is averaging over a goal a game heading into Friday night.

Friday night will also be the first time Temple plays Villanova since 2005. The Wildcats won the last matchup eight years ago 2-1.

Volleyball set to host Temple Invitational

It took three weeks, but the volleyball team will finally have its home opener Friday night against Delaware State. The Owls will be home all weekend as they host the two-day Temple Invitational in the newly-renovated McGonigle Gym.

The Owls are coming in hot, winners of seven of their first nine matches which is the best start since 2001. Head coach Bakeer Ganes is in his third season patrolling the sidelines for Temple and has never been off to this good of a start as a head coach.

“I think we are doing as well as we thought we would be doing at this point in the season,” Ganes said. “I think it’s a great thing that we are off to a good start, of course. It is very important for the confidence. It shows all the hard work that the players have gone through in the summer and the pre-season. But it is not how we look like in the third week of the season, it’s how you finish.”

Temple went 3-0 at the Patriot Invitational two weeks ago and took the title, and senior Gabriella Matautia was named Tournament MVP. She also received American Athletic Conference Player of the Week,

This past weekend, the Owls went 2-1 at the Penn Invitational at the Palestra, defeating both Weber State and La Salle by scores of 2-1. The Owls dropped a tight, five-set match to host Penn. Matautia was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Opposite.

The team has eight new players and five freshman but they are coming together nicely. The freshman are getting a lot of playing time, especially Caroline Grattan and Tyler Davis. Senior transfer student Emily Carlin has been a nice addition to the team as she has gotten 10+ kills in 5 matches.

The Owls play two games Saturday, 1 PM against Brown and then again at 7 PM versus Hoftra.

Field Hockey ranked No. 14

Temple has fallen back a bit, but they still have a spot in the nation’s top-20.

The latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coaches Poll was released today, revealing that the Owls are now ranked No. 14.

Temple (4-2) lost to Delaware 2-0 on Friday night, but bounced right back with a 6-0 shutout of Monmouth the next day.

The University of Albany (5-0) now has the No. 11 spot in the nation. The Owls were ranked No. 11 last week, after a 3-0 shutout of Penn State and a 3-2 win against Richmond in overtime, earning their first national ranking in 12 years.

Conference play begins on Friday, when Temple takes on Villanova.

Golf tied for seventh at Adams Cup, Bibeau named assistant coach

After 36 holes of play at The Adams Cup in Newport, Rhode Island, Temple is tied for seventh place in the 16-team field with a score of 603.

Senior Matt Crescenzo shot a two-under 142 to lead the Owls.

Sophomore Brandon Matthews had a tough stretch on day one, carding a nine-over 81 during his morning round, but rebounded in the afternoon, shooting a one-over 73 and is tied with junior Mike Amole for 43nd place.

Junior Matt Teesdale is tied for 49th with an 11-over 155. Freshman Evan Galbreath carded a 15-over 159 to round out the lineup.

The Owls trail Hartford and Rhode Island by eight strokes for third place.

University of Central Florida leads the tournament with a 565.

The Adams Cup will conclude on Tuesday with eighteen holes of action.

Less than a year after his playing days at Temple concluded, Devin Bibeau is returning to Temple and has been named as an assistant coach to headman Brian Quinn.

Bibeau was a four-year letter winner and as a senior, placed fifth overall at the Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship and vaulted himself to a Top 10 finish at the Wildcat Invitational.

Bibeau was also named to the A 10 All-Conference team during his senior campaign.

Men’s soccer faces Delaware tonight

The Owls will face a tough task when they return to action at Delaware tonight at 7 p.m.

Delaware has the same record as the Owls, 4-1-0, and have lost at home yet this season.

Delaware is averaging three goals per game in their wins and was still able to score four goals in their only loss. This will be a great challenge for the Owls defense as it has only given up one goal in five games.

They had their four game shutout winning streak come to a close last Saturday against St. Joe’s, but still only gave up one goal in their 1-0 loss.

It is time for the offense to create chances and finish them to ease the pressure on the defense.

It will be interesting to see how the team will rebound also from their first loss of the season against St. Joe’s. This Delaware team scores a lot, but also gives up a good amount, so the Owls will have to use that to their advantage.

Youtz named Big East Offensive Player of the Week

After a big performance against Monmouth on Saturday, junior forward Amber Youtz has been named Big East Offensive Player of the Week.

It is the second time in a row that an Owl has won offensive player of the week honors, after senior midfielder/co-captain Molly Doyle received the accolade last week.

Youtz led the way in a 6-0 win against Monmouth over the weekend, scoring four goals and adding two assists for 10 points.

Her 10 points is tied for the most in one game by a Division I player this season.

Youtz’s four goals also made for her third career hat trick and the second time a Temple player has scored four or more goals in one game since 1992.

Alumni and All-American Alli Lokey was the last Owl to score four goals in a game, doing it in 2007.

Youtz was named Atlantic-10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2012, after scoring 22 goals and 10 assists for 54 points.

She has shown no signs of slowing down this season, leading the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points.

Youtz is currently second in the nation in points per game, averaging 3.33 points per. Her 1.33 goals per game average is also fourth in the nation.

Youtz has 34 goals and 84 assists in her career so far, placing her ninth all-time in the history of Temple Field Hockey for both categories.

Along with the Big East accolade, Youtz is also featured as the Under Armour Owlsports.com Athlete of the Week.
