Tennis looks to rebound against Saint Bonaventure

Temple (1-7, 0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) will look to snap a five-match losing streak at Saint Bonaventure (2-7, 0-1 A-10) Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Bonnies also sport a five-match losing streak, including three last weekend. They will be led by sophomore Marissa Brossard, who splits her time between the top two flights and is 9-7 on the year.

The Owls have not won the doubles point since playing Richmond on February 8. Juniors Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms, the normal top flight doubles team, will look to get the match started on a good note. The other doubles teams have been junior Yana Mavrina and sophomore Rebecca Breland, and sophomore Ama Osei and freshman Minami Okajima.

Breland was the only singles winner yesterday, and was also on the winning doubles team. She has won three straight singles matches, all in the third flight.

Women’s tennis travels to Buffalo

The women’s tennis team will take on Buffalo this afternoon at 1 p.m.

The match will take place in Buffalo. The Owls are 1-6 (0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference), and the Bulls are 4-0 (0-0 Mid-American Conference).

Temple has gotten off to a slow start this season, but the team is confident they can turn it around. A player to watch is junior Jordan Batey, who is 3-1 in singles play this spring.

Buffalo will be led by junior Tanvi Shah, who is 3-1 in singles play this season, all in the top flight. She also plays the top flight in doubles, where she is 4-0 partnered with junior Miranda Podlas

Tennis prepares for Philadelphia showdown

The men’s tennis team (2-3, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) will head to Penn (3-1, 0-0 Ivy League) for a match Wednesday at 3 p.m.

In 20 tries, Temple has never beaten Penn in men’s tennis. The Owls will look to break a three-match losing streak this season. The Quakers have not lost a home match all season.

Senior Kacper Rams (0-4) is expected to compete despite a sore shoulder. He will likely face either sophomore Jeremy Court (4-0) or junior Nikola Kocovic (2-1) in the top flight.

Coach Steve Mauro said he anticipates a tough match. This will be the Owls’ last match for 10 days, so they will be looking to go into the short break on a good note.

Tennis to take on Drexel in local matchup

The men’s tennis team faces off against Drexel on Friday at 12 p.m. at Legacy Tennis Center.

The Owls (2-2, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) look to snap a two-match losing streak. The Dragons (3-1, 0-0 Colonial Athletic Association) are on a two-match win streak.

Part of the Owls’ struggles can be attributed to senior Kacper Rams’ shoulder injury. Coach Steve Mauro said that Rams is “day-to-day”. Rams has not missed any matches, but Temple needs it’s captain and best player to put in a strong performance.

Drexel is led by sophomore Badr Ouabdelmoumen (2-1 in singles) and junior Skyler Davis (2-2 in singles). Both players have played in the top singles flight, and they are 3-0 together in the top doubles flight this spring.

Women’s tennis to take on Georgetown

The women’s tennis team will face Georgetown this morning at 11 a.m. at Legacy Tennis Center.

The Owls (1-5, 0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) will look to snap a three-match losing streak against the Hoyas (4-1, 1-0 Big East Conference), who are riding a four-match winning streak.

The Hoyas will be led by junior Kelly Comolli and senior Victoria Sekely, who are both on individual three-match win streaks. They have also recently been paired together in doubles matches, and they have won all three of them,

Temple has had a difficult start to the season. Junior Alicia Doms is the only Owl with a winning record in singles play (3-2). Coach Steve Mauro has said he believes the team will break out of this slump and come together.

Tennis match cancelled

The men’s tennis match against Davidson that was scheduled for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. has been cancelled.

The match was due to be played at the Atlantic Club in Manasquan, NJ. Manasquan is a shore town, and is under a Winter Storm Warning from today at 3 PM to Saturday at 6 AM. Therefore, it is likely to be unsafe for both Temple and Davidson to travel there.

The Owls’ Sunday match at Old Dominion is still set to take place. That will be at 1 p.m.

Women’s tennis to take on Richmond

The women’s tennis team will go up against Richmond tomorrow at noon at the University of Pennsylvania.

The match will be played at Penn because Legacy, the normal Temple home court, is not available. The Owls (1-4, 0-1 Atlantic 10 Conference) are looking for their first victory against Richmond (1-3, 0-0 A-10) since February 2008.

“Richmond will be a tough match,” coach Steve Mauro said. “We’ll do our best and hopefully we can come out on top.”

The Spiders will be led by sophomore Melissa Kandinata, who has played in the top singles flight in every match this year. She is 1-3 in those matches. Temple junior Yana Mavrina will likely be her opponent. She has also played in the top flight each time, and is 1-4.

Men’s tennis to play St. Francis tonight

The men’s tennis team takes on the St. Francis (NY) Terriers this evening at 7:30. This match will be played at the Upper Dublin Sports Club in Ambler, PA.

This is the first match of the spring season for both teams. Temple went 9-10 last season, and St. Francis went 6-14. The two teams played each other last season, when the Owls dominated in a 7-0 rout. Temple did not lose any of the 15 sets that were played, and the Terriers only won 15 games. For comparison, the Owls won 96.

Both teams are very different this year. Temple and St. Francis each only return three players from last year’s match.

Temple number one player will likely be senior captain Kacper Rams, who finished 3-3 in singles in the fall and 16-16 last season. Rams defeated then-senior Danhaldi Robinson 6-0, 6-0 last season.

The rest of the lineup is a toss up at this point, although the smart money is on sophomore Kristian Marquart to play at number two. Marquart played at number two in the fall, when he went 2-5 in singles. Marquart defeated then-senior James Brennan-Tsang last year 6-0 6-0.

The Terriers return their number one player from last year’s match, senior Tita Mba. Mba went 3-3 in singles in the fall. Last year, then-Temple senior Filip Rams defeated Mba 6-0, 6-1.

Men’s tennis adds two recruits for spring season

The men’s tennis team will welcome two new student-athletes this semester: Santiago Canete and Sam Rundle. Both of the recruits are freshman, adding even more youth to a team that has one upperclassmen among eight players.

Canete, 18, comes from Spain. He has competed in five IFT Men’s Circuit tournaments over the past two years. These tournaments are run by the International Tennis Federation, and they are considered the lowest rung of professional tennis. Most professional tennis players spend some time playing in these tournaments.

“I expect Santiago Canete to be, right away, an impact player,” coach Steve Mauro said. “He had great results in Spain, where he was a top 200 player.”

Rundle, 19, hails from Perth, in Western Australia. Besides one doubles match that took place in December 2007, there is no match information on the IFT’s website. Even Mauro admits that Rundle is a bit of a wild card.

“I haven’t seen him play, but from what I’m told, he’s the best athlete on our team,” Mauro said. “He comes from a very athletic family, and I think he’s going to get better and better playing at such a high caliber day in and day out.”

Both players made a highlight video to send to colleges.

The team plays their first match on Friday against St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s tennis opens season at VCU 4+1 Invite

The women’s tennis team will be heading to Richmond, Va. this weekend for their first competition of the spring season.

The other competing schools at the VCU 4+1 Invitational are Campbell, Morgan State, and the host, Virginia Commonwealth University. The Owls will play Campbell on Saturday at 11 a.m., VCU on Saturday at 3 p.m., and Morgan State on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The toughest test will be against the Rams, who are currently ranked 46th in the nation. Even though VCU and Temple are in the same conference this year, this will be their only match-up this season. They also met last season, and the Owls lost 1-6.

Each match consists of four singles and two doubles matches, all played at the same time. Despite the tournament setting, these matches will count towards the team’s record.

Coach Steve Mauro said seven or eight of the nine players on the roster will go to the tournament. Mauro expects to win two of the three matches this weekend.
