Owls ranked No. 18, Foran named player of the week

Temple improved to 8-2 over the weekend with a 2-1 win over Big East rival Rutgers and a 3-0 shutout of Sacred Heart.

The Owls have won five straight, keeping them within the nation’s top 20 for the fourth straight week.

This week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has the Owls in the No. 18 spot, placing them one spot behind the No. 17 ranking they held last week.

Temple has gotten off to its best start since 1990, but hasn’t moved up in the national rankings since taking the No. 11 spot back on Sept. 10.

A win on Friday night could change that.

The Owls will face conference opponent Louisville on Friday night, who at 7-2 is one spot ahead of Temple at No. 17.

Temple is 2-0 in Big East play after beating both Villanova and Rutgers, but Louisville will be the first ranked team it faces since shutting out the then No. 6 ranked Penn State 3-0 on Sept. 6.

Freshman forward Katie Foran had a big weekend for the Owls and she is getting recognized for it.

Foran has been named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals over the weekend.

She scored both of Temple’s goals in Friday’s 2-1 win over Rutgers and tallied the first goal in the 3-0 shutout of Sacred Heart on Sunday.

Foran is the third Owl to earn the award this season, joining senior midfielder/defender and co-captain Molly Doyle and junior forward Amber Youtz.

Owls to host Sacred Heart

Down 1-0 to Rutgers on Friday afternoon, No. 17 Temple came back and won 2-1 to improve its record to 7-2 this season.

Freshman forward Katie Foran scored both of the Owls’ goals in a breakout performance and is likely to get the start on Sunday against Sacred Heart, according to coach Amanda Janney.

Rutgers scored eight and a half minutes into the game on Friday, but Temple’s defense and goalkeeping continued their success by keeping Rutgers off the board for the rest of the game.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made two saves on Friday, with her and the Owls’ defense now holding opponents to below two goals per game in 2013.

Temple will be facing a Sacred Heart team that has dropped its last three games, with its last defeat being a 9-0 shutout from No. 11 Albany on Friday.

The Pioneers (3-5) lost the two games prior to Holy Cross and Fairfield by one-goal deficits.

This will be the first ever matchup between Temple and Sacred Heart.

Youtz injured, Theobald attends game

Junior forward Amber Youtz is out for two to three weeks with a right forearm injury.

Youtz currently leads the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. She is also third in the nation in goals per game with 1.25 and second in points per game with 3.13

The 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year suffered the injury during the Owls 4-1 win at Villanova on Sept. 20. The ball hit Youtz in the arm when senior midfielder/defender Molly Doyle tried clear the ball out of the defensive zone.

Youtz left the game to get her arm checked out, but came back in shortly after and played the rest of the way, scoring two goals in the second half.

She also played in the team’s next game against Longwood on Sept. 22, but sat out the second half.

Youtz was not on the sidelines for Friday afternoon’s 2-1 win over Rutgers, as she was recovering from her injury.

Temple has been getting more and more attention as the team progresses further into its first Big East season.

Now it has President Neil Theobald’s attention.

Theobald was in attendance for Temple’s 2-1 win against Rutgers on Friday afternoon. It was his first field hockey game and he liked what he saw.

“I had a great time, it’s very exciting,” Theobald said. “It’s a really fast game and about late in the first half I started to begin to understand the rules and boy, the speed with which they play…they are incredibly quick.”

Theobald also had the chance to meet the 17th best team in the country and thinks highly of them.

“They’re really good students,” Theobald said.  “I talked to them before the game, really great kids.”

“There is nothing that wasn’t enjoyable here today,” Theobald added.

Field Hockey faces conference rival Rutgers at home

The No. 17 ranked Owls (6-2) will play in their second conference game of the season this afternoon.

Rutgers (3-4) will visit Geasey Field for the first of Temple’s two home games this weekend.

The Owls won both of their games last weekend, with a 4-1 win at Villanova –the program’s first Big East conference game—on Friday night and then a thrilling 3-2 win in double overtime against Longwood on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Rutgers has dropped its last two games with back-to-back shutout losses to Albany on Sept. 15 and the No. 3 ranked University of Connecticut on Sept. 22.

Temple beat Rutgers in overtime in the last matchup 3-2 back in September of last year. The Rutgers has the advantage all-time however, with a 22-11-2 record against the Owls.

Field Hockey ranked No. 17

Temple has fallen three spots back in the national rankings, but remains in the top 20 for the third week in a row.

This week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll puts the Owls in the No. 17 spot. Temple was ranked No. 11 and No. 14 in the two weeks prior.

The Owls had a big weekend, with a 4-1 win against conference rival Villanova and 3-2 double overtime win against Longwood. They have won three straight since losing 2-0 to Delaware on Sept. 13.

At 6-2, Temple is off to its best start since 1991.

Owls ends weekend with home game against Longwood

Temple returns home to Geasey Field to face Longwood, fresh off of beating Villanova 4-1 in its first Big East conference game.

Longwood is 3-4, but won its last two games via an 8-1 blowout of Appalachian State and a 3-2 win over Radford.

Senior midfielder Stacey de Grandhomme, out of Cape Town, South Africa, leads Longwood in scoring with six goals and an assist for 13 points. She had a five-point performance against Appalachian State that was made up of two goals and an assist.

Prior to Friday night’s win over Villanova, the Owls shutout Monmouth 6-0 last Saturday.

Temple’s offense has been generating a lot more scoring opportunities in the past two games, after being outshot by its opponents in four of its first five games.

The Owls have also been playing well on the defensive end with just one goal allowed in the last two games.

Temple beat Longwood 5-3 on the road last season and is 3-0 all-time against the Virginia-based school.

Big East play begins for Owls

The time for Big East play is finally here.

Temple will take on Villanova Friday night in its first conference game of the year and its first ever in the Big East.

With a 2-4 record, Villanova has struggled to find its footing this season. They beat St. Louis 4-2, but closed out last weekend with a 4-1 loss to Kent State.

Temple was shutout 2-0 on the road by Delaware last Friday, but bounced back with a dominating 6-0 win against Monmouth at home the next day.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper and co-captain Lizzy Millen has done a great job protecting the cage this season, with the second best save percentage in the nation at .828.

The defense in front of her has played well too, helping to hold opponents to an average of 1.67 goals per game.

Youtz named Big East Offensive Player of the Week

After a big performance against Monmouth on Saturday, junior forward Amber Youtz has been named Big East Offensive Player of the Week.

It is the second time in a row that an Owl has won offensive player of the week honors, after senior midfielder/co-captain Molly Doyle received the accolade last week.

Youtz led the way in a 6-0 win against Monmouth over the weekend, scoring four goals and adding two assists for 10 points.

Her 10 points is tied for the most in one game by a Division I player this season.

Youtz’s four goals also made for her third career hat trick and the second time a Temple player has scored four or more goals in one game since 1992.

Alumni and All-American Alli Lokey was the last Owl to score four goals in a game, doing it in 2007.

Youtz was named Atlantic-10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2012, after scoring 22 goals and 10 assists for 54 points.

She has shown no signs of slowing down this season, leading the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points.

Youtz is currently second in the nation in points per game, averaging 3.33 points per. Her 1.33 goals per game average is also fourth in the nation.

Youtz has 34 goals and 84 assists in her career so far, placing her ninth all-time in the history of Temple Field Hockey for both categories.

Along with the Big East accolade, Youtz is also featured as the Under Armour Owlsports.com Athlete of the Week.
