Women’s soccer puts home win streak on the line against Drexel

The women’s soccer team will be taking on city rival Drexel on Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. at the Ambler Sports Complex.

“Drexel is going to be a high pressure team,” redshirt junior Jackie Krostek said. “They are going to come at us offensively and hopefully, we can absorb that.”

Entering the match, the Owls have had five home shutouts in a row dating back to last season. With two shutouts this year against New Jersey Institute of Technology and Iona, the Owls can only hope to keep this streak alive against a tough Drexel team, coach Matt Gwilliam said.

Temple (2-4-1) is undefeated (2-0-0) at home.

Drexel (5-1-1) is entering the city rival match against the Owl’s on a two game win streak. Drexel has not lost a match since they opened up the 2012 season against Longwood on Aug. 17.

For Temple, the squad is coming off of a tough 1-0 loss to Princeton on Sunday, Sept. 9. Freshman goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff allowed one goal against Ivy League Princeton.

“It is going to be a tough match for us,” Gwilliam said. “I expect a boxing match between the two city rival teams.”

Women’s soccer faces Princeton

The women’s soccer team will be taking on Ivy League Princeton today at Roberts Stadium at 12 p.m.

Coming off of their second win of the season on Friday against Iona, the Owls know that Princeton is another very tough opponent on their 2012 schedule, coach Matt Gwilliam said.

“I expect a really difficult team in Princeton,” Gwilliam said. “They are a very storied program and are a technical group on the field.”

Princeton is entering the match with a 1-1-1 record, while Temple looks to get their third win of the season, currently standing with a 2-3-1 record.

After a shutout win on Friday by freshman goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff, coach Gwilliam said that he is still unsure who will be in goal for today’s match against Princeton.

“Every week is a new week, and if I earn it, I will earn it,” Kerkhoff said when asked if she believes she will start in goal on Sunday.

The Owls are not phased by another tough competitor, as they have seen schools such as James Madison, Hofstra, and Princeton already this season, Gwilliam said.

“I think they’re going to be strong, fast, and athletic,” senior forward Morgyn Seigfried said. “They’re going to be a good team, but we have played a lot of good teams this season.

Women’s soccer hosts Iona

The women’s soccer team will look to capture its second win of the season on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Ambler Sports Complex against visiting Iona College at 4 p.m.

Entering Friday’s match, Temple comes in with a 1-3-1 record, while Iona will enter with a 1-2-1 record. Both of Iona’s losses have come on the road, while Temple’s lone win was at home.

With a slow start to the season, the Owls’ record has not indicated the way that the team has played, coach Matt Gwilliam said.

The Owls have lost three matches this season to Hofstra, James Madison and the University of Pennsylvania. With another tough match up against Iona on Friday, the Owls are hoping to put one in the win column, Gwilliam said.

“They are a really, really difficult team,” Gwilliam said. “They just had a big overtime win against Rhode Island and are really tough team.”

Gwilliam has yet to name a starting goalkeeper for Friday’s match. Coach Gwilliam pulled redshirt-senior goalkeeper Tara Murphy after allowing two goals 23 minutes apart in the 2-0 loss at Penn on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Freshman goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff replaced Murphy and earned her first collegiate save in the final 11 minutes of the Penn loss.

“We are just lacking in the cutting edge,” Gwilliam said. “We have done good things, but need to continue to work on the little things.”

Women’s soccer gears up for Penn

Temple (0-2-1) will take on city rival Penn (0-0) at Rhodes Field at The University of Penn campus today at 7 p.m.

While coach Matt Gwilliam says the team is taking each day one game at a time, it is no surprise that the Owls hope to compete with Penn’s athleticism throughout the match.

“Penn is a great team that has always had a pedigree of success,” coach Matt Gwilliam said. “They know how to win and they have “it””.

For the Owls, the Penn matchup is an exciting chance to play a night game in front of an away crowd that is just miles from Temple’s campus.

“We will be under the lights for the first time this season and that is exciting for us,” junior defender Karly O’Toole said.

Coming off of tough losses in their last two matches to two of Division I soccer’s better programs in Hofstra and James Madison, Temple hopes to match up better with Penn on Sunday.

“Penn is going to be a very fit and physical team that is good on the ball,” senior midfielder Jourdan Brill said.

Jourdan Brill named to all-tournament team

Senior midfielder Jouran Brill, who recently began her senior year at Temple, walked away from the Fairfield Inn by Marriot tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. from Aug. 24-26 with a spot on the all-tournament team.

“I am going to be completely honest, I had no idea that there even was an all-tournament team for that tournament,” Brill said. “I knew I played two good games, but I had no idea. I was really excited and really surprised.”

With three of Temple’s 13 total shots in the tournament, Brill also added the team’s only goal of the weekend in the 3-1 loss against Hofstra, eventually earning her the honor of all-tournament team.

“I actually found out from my teammates on the bus after the tournament was over that I was named to the all-tournament team,” Brill said.

Although Temple lost both matches of the weekend, Brill said that her most memorable moment of the tournament was leading nationally ranked Hofstra 1-0 for most of the first half.

“She was fantastic, very competitive, and did everything we asked of her,” coach Matt Gwilliam said. “She truly earned it and I am happy for her.”

Women’s soccer “excited” about final A-10 season

The women’s soccer team will enter the 2012 season as the last team at Temple to play a season in the Atlantic 10 Conference. As the Owls will enter the Big East in all sports in 2013, the women’s soccer team will have its last shot at capturing the A-10 title.

The 20-game 2012 schedule for the women’s soccer team is split into 10 home games at Ambler Campus and 10 away games. Of the 20 games, nine are A-10 conference games, representing the last time Temple will face A-10 opponents in conference play.

“I am very excited about the schedule this year,” coach Matt Gwilliam said.

Entering his second season with the Owls, Gwilliam sees this season as a stepping stone for next year when Temple will begin play in the Big East. Gwilliam hopes that the matches on Aug. 24 against Hofstra at Temple’s Ambler campus and the match at James Madison University on Aug. 26 will help the team prepare for the Big East move in 2013.

“Both Hofstra and James Madison have a pedigree comparable to teams of the Big East,” Gwilliam said.

Included in the 2012 schedule are four Big-5 matchups. The Owls’ first Big-5 game of the year will be against the University of Pennsylvania on Sept. 2. On Sept. 14, Temple will host Drexel University at Ambler.

The St. Joseph’s University Hawks will visit Ambler for a game against the Owls on Sept. 29. The final matchup of the Big-5 rivalry will conclude on Oct. 28 as the Owls will host La Salle.

Dayton, the back-to-back-to-back A-10 champion, is not on Temple’s regular season schedule.
