Women’s tennis will compete at George Washington

The women’s tennis team (5-10, 2-4 Atlantic 10 Conference) will square off against George Washington (8-5, 2-1 A-10) Saturday at noon in Washington, D.C.

The Owls are currently on a three-match losing streak, having lost two matches last weekend: a 7-0 sweep at the hands of Penn, and a 4-3 loss to Fordham.

Since being elevated to the top flight seven matches ago, junior Alicia Doms is 4-3. Her last match was a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss to senior Amy Simidian of Fordham.

A player to watch for Temple is junior Jordan Batey. She has won 5 of her last 7 singles matches, including a 6-1, 6-3 second flight victory over Fordham sophomore Sarah Ali. Batey has normally played in either the third or fourth flight this spring.

George Washington has lost three of its last four matches. The Rams’ best players this spring have been freshman Stephanie Wei and senior Mimi Hamling. Wei normally plays third flight, and Hamling plays fourth flight. Both players are 10-3 this season.

Doms named A-10 POW

Temple junior Alicia Doms has been named Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week. She won the award for the week spanning March 4-10.

Temple did not have any matches in that time frame, but the press release from the A-10 cites her performance in the March 3 match at Lehigh. Doms teamed with junior Jordan Batey and snared an 8-3 second flight doubles victory over freshman Ali Kaminetsky and junior Taylor Hampshire. Doms also triumphed in singles, defeating junior Jenai Bilimoria 6-4, 6-2 in the top flight.

Doms is 6-3 this spring in singles matches, including a 3-0 mark in the top flight. She is 5-3 in doubles matches, including a 5-1 record with Batey and an 0-2 record with junior Yana Mavrina.

Doms is currently on a three-match singles win streak, and will look to continue that at Xavier on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Owls try to end losing streak at home

The men’s tennis team will take on Binghamton Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Legacy Tennis Center.

The Owls (2-6, 1-1 Atlantic 10 Conference) are on a six-match losing streak, and have only won one total point in their last three matches.

That point was won by freshman Nicolas Paulus, who is 5-3 this spring. He and freshman Santiago Canete (4-4) are the only Temple players who have won more than one singles match this season.

Temple’s most consistent success has been from their third flight doubles team of sophomore Kristian Marquart and freshman Sam Rundle. They are 3-1 this spring, 2-1 in the third flight and 1-0 in the second flight.

The Bearcats (4-5, 0-0 America East Conference) are coming off two losses at Ivy League schools: a 6-1 loss to #46 Columbia, and a 7-0 sweep at the hands of #24 Cornell.

They will be led by sophomore Robin Lesage, who is 5-4 in the top singles flight. Binghamton’s top doubles team is senior Bastian Bomkessel and sophomore Ismael Dinia, who are 2-5 together in the top doubles flight.

Men’s and women’s tennis teams travel Lehigh

The men’s tennis team will travel to Lehigh Sunday to face the Mountain Hawks at 10 a.m.

The Owls (2-5, 1-1 Atlantic 10 Conference) are on a five-match slide. The Mountain Hawks (7-1, 0-0 Patriot League) are on a six-match winning streak.

Lehigh’s player to watch is sophomore Ben Gilman. He is 6-2 on the season, with a 5-1 record in the top flight. He will be a tough matchup for the injured Kacper Rams, who hasn’t won a singles match this spring.

Lehigh’s top doubles team, junior Mark Goldberg and sophomore Mitchell Petersen, is 4-4 this year. They will likely face Rams and freshman Santiago Canete, who have lost their last two matches.

The women’s tennis team will also travel to Lehigh Sunday to face the Mountain Hawks. That match will commence at 2 p.m.

The Owls (2-7, 1-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) are looking to build a winning streak after defeating St. Bonaventure last weekend. The Mountain Hawks (2-6, 0-0 Patriot League) are coming off a 6-1 loss to Towson on Saturday.

Lehigh has been swept in four of its losses (at Penn, Rutgers, Delaware and Stony Brook).

The Lehigh doubles team of junior Jenai Bilimoria and sophomore Abby Farrell is 4-4 on the season. They are currently on a three-match win streak. They will likely face one of two Temple duos: juniors Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms (3-1), or junior Yana Mavrina and sophomore Rebecca Breland (3-1).

Tennis tries to right ship against Colonials

The men’s tennis team is taking on #50 George Washington Saturday at 5 p.m. at Legacy Tennis Center.

Temple (2-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) has lost four straight matches. GW (5-4, 0-0 A-10) is coming off a 4-3 loss at Columbia on Friday.

Since this is a conference match, both teams will have extra motivation to win. Last season, the Colonials knocked the Owls out of the A-10 tournament on their way to their second straight A-10 title.

Each team’s top flight singles player has been struggling recently. Temple senior Kacper Rams is 0-5 this season. He has been struggling with a shoulder injury that, while painful, can be played through. GW sophomore Francisco Dias is 2-7 this spring.

The top doubles match will likely pit Rams and freshman Santiago Canete (2-1) against junior Ulrik Thomsen and senior Alexander Van Gils (2-4). The Temple duo’s success is somewhat surprising, considering Rams’ injury and Canete’s inexperience in doubles.

Tennis looks to rebound against Saint Bonaventure

Temple (1-7, 0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) will look to snap a five-match losing streak at Saint Bonaventure (2-7, 0-1 A-10) Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Bonnies also sport a five-match losing streak, including three last weekend. They will be led by sophomore Marissa Brossard, who splits her time between the top two flights and is 9-7 on the year.

The Owls have not won the doubles point since playing Richmond on February 8. Juniors Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms, the normal top flight doubles team, will look to get the match started on a good note. The other doubles teams have been junior Yana Mavrina and sophomore Rebecca Breland, and sophomore Ama Osei and freshman Minami Okajima.

Breland was the only singles winner yesterday, and was also on the winning doubles team. She has won three straight singles matches, all in the third flight.

Women’s tennis travels to Buffalo

The women’s tennis team will take on Buffalo this afternoon at 1 p.m.

The match will take place in Buffalo. The Owls are 1-6 (0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference), and the Bulls are 4-0 (0-0 Mid-American Conference).

Temple has gotten off to a slow start this season, but the team is confident they can turn it around. A player to watch is junior Jordan Batey, who is 3-1 in singles play this spring.

Buffalo will be led by junior Tanvi Shah, who is 3-1 in singles play this season, all in the top flight. She also plays the top flight in doubles, where she is 4-0 partnered with junior Miranda Podlas

Tennis prepares for Philadelphia showdown

The men’s tennis team (2-3, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) will head to Penn (3-1, 0-0 Ivy League) for a match Wednesday at 3 p.m.

In 20 tries, Temple has never beaten Penn in men’s tennis. The Owls will look to break a three-match losing streak this season. The Quakers have not lost a home match all season.

Senior Kacper Rams (0-4) is expected to compete despite a sore shoulder. He will likely face either sophomore Jeremy Court (4-0) or junior Nikola Kocovic (2-1) in the top flight.

Coach Steve Mauro said he anticipates a tough match. This will be the Owls’ last match for 10 days, so they will be looking to go into the short break on a good note.

Tennis to take on Drexel in local matchup

The men’s tennis team faces off against Drexel on Friday at 12 p.m. at Legacy Tennis Center.

The Owls (2-2, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) look to snap a two-match losing streak. The Dragons (3-1, 0-0 Colonial Athletic Association) are on a two-match win streak.

Part of the Owls’ struggles can be attributed to senior Kacper Rams’ shoulder injury. Coach Steve Mauro said that Rams is “day-to-day”. Rams has not missed any matches, but Temple needs it’s captain and best player to put in a strong performance.

Drexel is led by sophomore Badr Ouabdelmoumen (2-1 in singles) and junior Skyler Davis (2-2 in singles). Both players have played in the top singles flight, and they are 3-0 together in the top doubles flight this spring.
