Owls announce non-conference schedule

On Thursday, the men’s basketball team announced its non-conference schedule for the upcoming season.

Temple, who finished 22-9 last season, will begin non-conference play on Nov. 13 with a trip to Annapolis, Maryland for the Veterans Classic held at the United States Naval Academy. There, the Owls will face the University of North Carolina, who returns its top four scorers from last year’s team that reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Six days later, the Owls will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, which takes place on Nov. 19, 20 and 22.

In Puerto Rico, Temple will be joined by Butler University, the University of Miami, the University of Minnesota, Mississippi State University, Missouri State University, Texas Tech University and the University of Utah.

Up next, Temple will host Fairleigh Dickinson University and the University of Delaware on Nov. 29 and Dec. 2, respectively.

After the two-game home stand, the Owls will travel to Madison, Wisconsin on Dec. 5 to face the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who appeared in two straight Final Fours and is returning two of its top four scorers.

The Owls will finish the month of December off with a trip to the University of Pennsylvania on Dec. 9 and back-to-back home games against St. Joseph’s University on Dec. 13 and Delaware State University on Dec. 19.

The Owls will open the new calendar year on Jan. 20 with a trip to The Palestra to face Big 5 rival La Salle University. The team will finish its non-conference play with a home game against Big 5 rival and defending Big East conference champion, Villanova University on Feb. 17.

Men’s basketball schedule completed

After originally being announced in June, the rest of the 2013-14 men’s basketball schedule has been revealed.

The dates and locations of most non-conference games had been announced, but no dates for conference matchups, nor had any game times been known.

Only four of 30 games (at Pennsylvania, at Towson, Texas Southern and LIU-Brooklyn) will not be nationally televised. The 26 nationally televised regular season games is a record for Temple.

The Owls will play every American Athletic Conference team twice in the regular season: once at the Liacouras Center and once at the opponent’s home arena for a total of 18 games. They begin conference play at Rutgers on New Year’s Day 2014 at 8 p.m.

Defending national champion Louisville comes to Philadelphia on Thursday, Feb. 13 for a 7 p.m. game that will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2. Temple will also host Memphis on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. and Connecticut on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 9 p.m. Both the Louisville and UConn matchups will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN, and Memphis game will be on ESPN2.

The one non-conference matchup that was not given a date in the previous release was with Villanova. The Wildcats will make the short trip to North Philadelphia for a game on Saturday, Feb 1. The game time has not yet been announced.

Temple will definitely play one game on ESPN’s flagship network. The matchup against La Salle, on Saturday, Jan. 18 at noon, will be part of ESPN’s College GameDay tour.

The field hockey team will enter the 2013 season as a Big East Conference affiliate, and the newly released schedule shows that they will be up against tougher competition as a result.

This season, the Owls will face seven teams from 2012 that were ranked in the Top 25. Temple will compete against No. 3 Penn State on Sept. 6, No. 19 Richmond on Sept. 8, No. 25 Louisville on Oct. 4, No. 8 Old Dominion on Oct. 13, No. 15 Drexel on October 20, No. 13 Lafayette on Oct. 27 and No. 4 Connecticut on Nov. 2.

The season will begin at home, with the Conference Cup Tournament at Geasey Field during Labor Day weekend.

Two games are scheduled for Aug. 31, with Maryland and New Hampshire playing at noon, followed by Temple’s matchup against Ohio State at 2:30 p.m.  The first and third place games will be played on Sept. 1.

The last home game of 2013 is Oct. 25 against Georgetown. From there the Owls will go on a two-game road trip to play Lafayette and Connecticut before the Big East Tournament begins on Nov. 8.

Temple finished with a 12-9 regular season record in 2012, making it the first time the team has finished with a record above .500 since 2007.

There are eight opponents the Owls faced from last year on this season’s schedule (Penn State, Richmond, Delaware, Monmouth, Rutgers, Bucknell, Drexel and Lafayette).  Temple went 3-5 against those teams last season.
