Men’s soccer begins A-10 play

The men’s soccer team is set to begin Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend, taking on conference rivals St. Bonaventure and Duquesne at the Ambler Sports Complex.

The Owls have had great success against teams that are below .500. The four teams they have beaten (Manhattan, St. Peter’s, Howard and Rider) are a combined 3-33-1. They’ve lost to tough teams in Virginia Tech, Cal Poly-Tech, Cal State-Northridge and Villanova. The Owls carry a 4-4-1 record into A-10 play.

Temple may be in luck tomorrow against the Bonnies, who are entering conference play 2-8 on the season. The Bonnies, who are 0-5 on the road, head to Ambler to take on a Temple team that is 3-0 on their home turf.

The Owls are 3-0 against the Bonnies in their last three meetings. Junior defender Nolan Hemmer scored the game-winner last season, beating them by a score of 2-1. Temple will look to win back-to-back games for the second time this season.

A-10 play gets underway Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the Bonnies at Ambler.

Ice hockey begins play in ACHA Showcase

Temple ice hockey will see a lot of ice this weekend when they travel to Rockville, Md. for the Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association Division II showcase.

The Owls will play four games in three days, starting with Wagner College and Siena University Friday.

Freshman forward Jayson Marbach and junior forward Joe Pikso head into the weekend as the leading scorers for Temple with nine points each. Marbach will look to continue his performance from last weekend, in which he racked up six points in games against Montclair State and Penn State Universities.

Wagner will come in having faced Georgetown Univerisity just hours prior at 10:30 p.m. last night. Siena will figure to pose a challenge for Temple despite their 0-2-1 record.

Temple is 4-1 and will look to build on their record this weekend.

Temple will face Wagner at 12:45 p.m. and Siena at 9 p.m. Friday, respectively.

Women’s soccer travel to St. Bonaventure

Looking for the first win in conference play, the women’s soccer team will travel to St. Bonaventure in its second Atlantic 10 Conference match-up on Friday at 3 p.m.

“I expect this match to be a battle and a close match,” redshirt-senior goalkeeper Tara Murphy said.

St. Bonaventure is also searching for its first A-10 conference win, as the Bonnies are 0-2-0 while the Owls are 0-1-0 in conference play on the season.

“They are a typical A-10 team,” junior defender Karly O’Toole said. “They are going to be fast and a good, physical team.”

Last season, Temple tied St. Bonaventure in a 0-0 draw. The match last season was dominated by defensive play and the same is expected in this year’s match, O’Toole said.

Entering the match, the Owls are coming off a 1-0 loss in their first match of A-10 play against St. Joseph’s University. Temple will begin play with a 3-7-2 record overall, while St. Bonaventure will open with an overall 3-8-1 record.

“We are going to have to defend hard like we have and hopefully put some balls in the back of [St. Bonaventure’s] net,” Murphy said.
